What is the difference between good and poor quality cashmere? First, be sure to check the label. Many brands' so-called "cashmere" is actually just a bad mix between cashmere and wool. This may be much cheaper, but it's much less expensive in terms of quality and feel, and more prone to pilling.
It's not always easy for an inexperienced person to distinguish between quality and low-quality cashmere until the first few washes. Here we break down what you should look for to make sure you're getting the best cashmere coats.
From a technical point of view, the quality of the fibers depends on their thickness and length. The longer they are, the more durable the sweater will be, the more durable it will be, and the less likely it will pucker. The length of cashmere fibers varies from 28 to 42 mm. Longer fibers are usually found at the neck and under the belly and are more expensive.
The smaller the thickness, the softer the yarn. The diameter of the fibers can vary from 15 to 19 microns, which has a huge impact on softness.
Touch the sweater to see if it is soft and light, and place it around your neck to test if it itches. You can also try to check its surface. Excessive initial fluffiness may mean that the yarn is spun from shorter and less tolerant fibers.
Look for a two-ply cashmere garment where the two yarns are twisted together to make the knit more flexible. Single-ply cashmere is less durable and may be more prone to holes. Two layers also mean that the sweater will be knit tighter and therefore softer and warmer. Brands should state how many layers they use in their garments, and if not, check the tightness of the knit and you should have a feel for it.

Before dyeing, the fibers come in three natural colors: white, brown and beige. As you might expect, the whiter cashmere fibers require less dye to produce a specific color, thus reducing the negative impact of dyeing on their natural softness. High-end spinners use a much higher percentage of white fibers in all colors, not just the lighter ones.
Even when cashmere yarns are well sourced, poor knitting can negatively affect the look and feel of the final product. Better knits can be identified by a tighter knit. Try stretching a part of the sweater to see if it easily returns to its original shape. Products made in Italy or Scotland are often safer choices than those made in China, but this also depends on the individual company, so choose only brands you trust.
